Buying responsibly sourced seafood can be a challenge if you don’t know where to shop. Not all grocery stores are clear about the sustainability of their seafood, and some stores aren’t very transparent when customers ask where their fish comes from. That’s why we’ve rounded up a list of a few grocery stores that you can count on to sell responsibly sourced seafood. Of course, there are many other grocery chains that supply good seafood, so we recommend checking the seafood section on the website of your favorite grocery store to read up on their seafood sustainability programs.
Costco
You may frequent this retailer for their great deals on bulk product, but did you know that Costco is also a great place to buy sustainable seafood? Costco has a whole range of responsibly sourced products, including their Kirkland Signature brand of canned tuna and Regal Springs Tilapia, both fresh and frozen. In fact, Costco recently stopped buying from several of their former suppliers that used irresponsible practices or were selling fish that were associated with environmental concerns. They have also updated their seafood policy, pledging to pursue aquaculture certification standards that support best practices.
Safeway
This large grocery chain was recently ranked as the best supermarket to shop for sustainable seafood because they do the most to sell fish in a way that sustains the world’s oceans and lakes. Safeway has taken many steps to ensure the fish they sell is responsibly sourced, such as discontinuing the sale of unsustainable fish, supporting seafood conservation initiatives and providing their customers with point-of-sale information on the fish they are buying. Safeway sells a wide variety of seafood at their grocery stores, including salmon, fresh Tilapia, canned seafood and shrimp.
H-E-B
H-E-B grocery stores are committed to the health and longevity of the world’s seafood population, which is why they have a whole section dedicated to sustainability on their website, including videos, their seafood policy and a sustainability chart.
H-E-B works with the Environmental Defense fund to ensure seafood sustainability. They support traceability systems, so customers can know where their fish is from. They also partner with companies and suppliers that are certified as sustainable. If you’re looking to shop at a store that carries a wide range of responsibly sourced seafood, including sushi, shellfish, crab, salmon and fresh and frozen Tilapia, be sure to check out your local H-E-B.
Kroger
Kroger grocery stores promise to exceed your high standards for seafood sustainability. They source their seafood from carefully chosen fisheries and fish farms to ensure you are getting a high-quality product. By working with the Global Aquaculture Alliance and the Marine Stewardship Council, Kroger is ensuring that you can feel good about purchasing seafood offerings such as Tilapia, farm-raised fish, wild-caught fish and shellfish.
When you need to stock up your fridge and freezer with all your favorite seafoods, be sure to stop by one of these four grocery stores that are committed to responsibly sourced seafood. You’ll feel good knowing your fish dinners are a choice that’s healthy for both you and the environment!
