When you’re on holidays, it’s easy to fall into the trap of dining out for every meal and picking whatever looks tastiest on the menu. While enjoying yourself and trying out all the local cuisine is a fun part of every vacation, it’s also important to balance it with eating healthy foods. We’ve got a few tips for you to take along on your next vacation.
Order an Appetizer for a Meal
Instead of ordering a large main course when you go out for lunch or dinner, why not order an appetizer? Since the portion sizes at restaurants are often far larger than what you’re used to making at home, you may find that an appetizer is actually the perfect amount of food for your lunch or dinner. If you’re out with friends and family, ordering several appetizers and sharing them is a great way to try several types of the local cuisine in one meal!
Limit Yourself to One Treat a Day
One of the best parts of vacation is treating yourself to things you normally wouldn’t back at home, whether it’s a fun souvenir or a big dessert. While you don’t need to forgo the sweet treats altogether when you’re on holidays, limit yourself to one food treat a day. We know it’s hard, but that way you can still enjoy spoiling yourself without spoiling your healthy eating patterns.
Do Your Research Beforehand
Before you leave for your trip, you’ll probably spend time researching all the great shops, attractions and sights to see while you’re on holidays. Why not spend time looking up great healthy dining options as well? Sites like TripAdvisor, Yelp and Zomato can help you find delicious, local restaurants that won’t ruin your diet. Check out the reviews and menus online before you dine to make sure you’re getting the best possible experience.
Don’t Drink Your Calories
Although you may be tempted to order a beachside margarita while you’re on vacation, you may want to think twice; just one drink contains up to 700 calories! Alcoholic beverages, smoothies and frozen drinks often contain far more calories than you’d think, which may result in you going over your daily calorie goals. If you do want to unwind, skip the sugar-filled cocktails and instead sip on a lower-calorie drink like white or red wine, light beer or tequila on the rocks.
Stock Up on Grab and Go Snacks
Between shopping, sightseeing and relaxing, you’re sure to work up an appetite. Instead of stopping into ice cream parlors and bakeries for your snacks throughout the day, why not throw a few healthy snacks into your purse or bag at the beginning of each day? Ask your concierge or host where you can pick up some fresh fruits and veggies.
Eating healthy while on vacation doesn’t have to be a challenge; it just requires a bit of extra planning ahead of time. Despite the extra effort, you’ll know it was worth it when you come home from your holidays just as fit and healthy as you were the day you left.
