Environmental Organizations You Should Pay Attention To

Each day, we can do a little something to help the world become a better place. Whether it’s composting or using a reusable bag, it’s apparent that the earth and our environment are worth taking care of. Of course, while we can each help in our own small ways, it pays to have large organizations of likeminded people to back up these environmental views and share information.

These organizations, with the environment at their core, help us understand the key issues and can even point us in the right direction when it comes to making certain choices. For example, Regal Springs has been awarded quite a few seals of approval for their work in responsible aquaculture from some of the most prestigious councils. But which organizations should you look too? Which ones should you trust? We take a closer look at six environmental organizations that are worth noting.

Aquaculture Stewardship Council

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) was founded in 2010 by the WWF and the Dutch Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH). The ASC aims to be the world’s leading certification for responsibly farmed seafood—the global standards for which were developed by the WWF Aquaculture Dialogues. They strive to reward responsible aquaculture, promote the best environmental and social choices when buying seafood and help shift the market towards sustainable practices.

World Wildlife Fund

You may not recognize them right away by name, but you surely recognize the panda in the World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) logo. Within the WWF’s main initiative, they focus on six key areas: forests, marine, freshwater, wildlife, food and climate. Within this, they work towards saving species, providing fresh drinking water, fighting climate change and changing the way big businesses operate with the environment in mind.

Greenpeace

Founded in Vancouver, Canada, Greenpeace has been on the frontline fighting environmental issues for 45 years. They focus on combating climate change, protecting the rainforest and oceans, advocating for more socially responsible farming and finding safer alternatives to chemicals used in products. Though the company has Canadian roots, their headquarters is now based in Amsterdam. Today, Greenpeace has more than 2.9 million members worldwide who represent the company at almost every environmental conference internationally.

Global Aquaculture Alliance

The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) is an international non-profit organization that works hard to feed the world through responsible aquaculture. They award producers who practice safe and responsible aquaculture with a Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification. The number of facilities awarded BAP certification increases as more and more farms, like the ones operating for Regal Springs, practice more efficient and responsible means of aquaculture.

David Suzuki Foundation

The David Suzuki Foundation (DSF) is an environmental organization co-founded by David Suzuki, of course. Suzuki is an acclaimed environmentalist, scientist and broadcaster known for his work with Canada’s public broadcaster CBC. The DSF focuses mainly on climate change and oceans, but also offers education on how to avoid harmful chemicals as a consumer and how to preserve the habitat of our wildlife.

National Science Foundation

The National Science Foundation (NSF) serves many different areas of science, including sustainability and the environment. Through this interest in eco-friendly responsibility, they work to provide efficient solutions for companies, customers and the planet. The foundation has also awarded Regal Springs a seal of approval through their Surefish program and Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Point training.

These are just some of the impactful organizations who are working hard to protect our planet and its limited resources. What other foundations should be getting more recognition for the work they do?
