1988
Where it all began…
A beautiful freshwater lake in Java, Indonesia. A UN aid worker. Sounds like the opening of a romance novel, but really, it’s just the start of how The Healthy Fish Co. came to be.
What you see today is all part of our founder’s vision: sustainable fish farming that does good and adds to the local community rather than takes away from it. What a guy.
1991
We expanded into cage farming* and opened our first hatchery
*Not to be confused with cage fighting — a very different kettle of fish.
1998
Started farming in Lake Toba: the world’s largest volcanic lake
Sounds kind of terrifying (it was once the site of the largest volcanic eruption on Earth) but that was some 74,000 years ago now, so we reckon we’re okay.
Oh, and we also welcomed Aquafinca St. Peter Fish to the family in 1998. It was a BIG year.
2008
We expanded into Mexico’s Chiapas region
Full of jungle ruins, wildlife, regional specialties and traditional culture. Chiapas also happens to be blessed with stunning freshwater lakes…
2012
We launched our first exports to the USA
AND opened our Amacohíte industrial complex in Mexico. Exciting stuff!
2018
We achieved ASC certification and 4 BAP stars in LATAM for tilapia
Yep, we’re pretty proud of that one. Go us!
2020
We bumped up our sustainability program
We didn’t just dip a toe in. We jumped headfirst into the blue food movement: the shift from land-based proteins to aquatic proteins, all in a bid to tackle climate change AND world hunger without depleting scarce ocean resources. No mean feat.
2025
Today, we’re the largest producer of responsibly farmed premium tilapia
We don’t mean to brag, but it’s true.
And the rest, as they say, is history…
